An Archive of Future Memories
An Archive of Future Memories: A Letter to my Daughter is an ongoing multimedia project developed during Al-Adeeb’s residency at the Yale Center for the Study of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration. It illuminates the everyday practices of survival by charting the interconnections between a trilogy of personal forced displacements and their relationship to pivotal moments in contemporary Iraqi and American histories, U.S. military interventions, and intergenerational relations.
Structured as a correspondence from mother to daughter, the work weaves performance, biography, letter-writing, drawing, photography, video, and sound art to bear witness to the textures of memory that accompany transnational migration and refugee movement — both its trauma and its hope. Throughout, it applies a transnational feminist lens to refugee studies, holding the analytical and the intimate in the same frame.
